Lifestyle and Youthful Looks: What You Do Now Can Make You Look 10 Years Older Later.

Lifestyle and Youthful Looks: What You Do Now Can Make You Look 10 Years Older Later.

Lifestyle has been well proven to have a dramatic effect on the risk of age-related health diseases. Smoking, excessive alcohol use, poor diet and lack of exercise have been shown to lead to obesity, stroke, diabetes, heart disease and cancer. However, until recently, the association of lifestyle and facial aging has been less well studied.

In a study in the August 2015 edition of The British Journal of Dermatology, Gunn and et al studied various lifestyle factors and their effects on perceived facial aging. The study included 318 Dutch men and 329 Dutch women age 45-75 years and 162 non-smoking English women. The risk factors studied included:

  • Smoking
  • Having skin that went red in the sun
  • Being outside in the sun most of the summer
  • Tanning bed use
  • Wearing false teeth and not flossing
  • BMI (body mass index).

The study revealed that Dutch men who smoked, had skin that went red in the sun, spent most of the summer outside, used a tanning bed, wore false teeth and did not floss were perceived to be 9.3 years older then the control group who did not have the above lifestyle habits.  The Dutch woman who smoked, had skin that went red in the sun, spent most of the summer outside, used a tanning bed, wore false teeth and did not floss, and had a low BMI were perceived to be 10.9  years older then the control group.  Even the English women who were non-smokers, cleaned their teeth once a day, wore false teeth, irregularly moisturized their skin and had skin that went red in the sun were perceived to be 9.1 years older.

Smoking, having skin that becomes red in the sun, being outside in the sun most of the summer, tanning bed use, wearing false teeth and not flossing are all associated with looking almost a DECADE older!

Positive lifestyle changes now can have significant long-term beneficial effects on looking younger latter.
